Stewing Hen (great for soups)


These are 3 to 4 yr old heritage / standard breed hens that have slowed or stopped laying….most are Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock breed.  These whole birds are very different from the Cornish in that they have narrower breasts and are very chewy….therefore they are best slow roasted, crock potted or pressure cooked.  They make an amazing broth much richer than the hybrid breeds.

They are also extremely good for slow boiling and making soup!
